History Of Front Entries.
Stone Henge was and still is impressive, and then think about all the churches and shrines, these are surely impressive front entries. Now in today’s world, we are replicating them, sometimes very similar in design, and other times with a different twist on them.
Many clients and builders alike return from their trips abroad to replicate front entries they have seen on their travels. With just their photos and the house plans or measurements, I have recreated many, not exact replicas but close enough for the client to like the end results.
Exquisite Front Entries, Statement of Arrival.
So they are a statement, a grand gesture that sets the stage for what’s inside too. Like the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, in Rome I mention that as I visited there a few years back, the entry stunned me, but even more so the inside. They announce with pride, ‘You’ve arrived!’ But,
Why do grand front entries matter so much, especially in the luxurious corners of places like Florida, the Caribbean, and Dubai? They reflect the architectural design of the building, drawing you in. Well-crafted front entries or a porte-cochere isn’t just about extravagance; it carries the historical weight of design and hospitality. Atlantis Dubai, The Biltmore in Miami, are other places I have visited with great entries.
Sign of Welcome.
Making designs like Porte Cochere’s as front entries for high-end real estate. Is more about creating a welcoming introduction to one’s abode or business. Being deeply involved with designing, producing, and installing these magnificent front entries, or port-cochere, makes you realise each project is so unique. From opulent residences, and huge clubhouses, to the gated entries of prestigious developments, the goal has always been to deliver grandeur.
Preliminary Design Of Front Entries
The complexity of these designs is often underestimated. It’s not as simple as erecting a few columns and calling it a day. There are many layers to this sort of project – from considering the layouts, and the setbacks in the design needed before the final cast stone can be produced and installed, even down to the alignment of each joint in many cases. Each element must come together perfectly to reflect the client’s vision and turn into one of these formidable front entries, capable of withstanding time. then,
The elements that make up these entryways can be so varied, columns are used many times as the linchpins. The combination of plain and spiralled columns can reflect a great anchoring point in the design both visually and in its design to mimic support. Many have stepped recesses to accept columns or corbels and overhead intricacies of decorative bandings, veneers, frieze or other details, now perhaps you begin to appreciate the complexity and detail that goes into these monumental entrances. but,
Design Details: Assembling Monumental Entryways.
The specifics about what goes into making these front entries so majestic. Spiralled columns aren’t a structural necessity; they’re a statement of historical grandeur. Pair them with plain columns, and you create a great contrast that can stop people in their tracks. It’s a powerful statement, and it’s an element that has been varied and used many times for homes of opulence.
Front Entries Requires Involving Builders Early.
Each entryway is a complex puzzle, most need extensive drawings and measurements to work with all the different elements, demanding precise fits. Builders need to be involved early to allow adequate space and the right setbacks in the shell construction. If not, it limits your design or adds unnecessary complexity and costs to the project.
Elements For Front Entries
Adding ornate bandings or a sophisticated frieze can make an impressive addition. Each banding, each carved detail, is meticulously thought out. So to contribute to the grand narrative of the entry but also how they will fit together. The length of the pattern repeats, different thicknesses and attributes that allow other elements to connect into the design. This is more so the case when any arched details are called for. Now what pieces can be made using flexible rubber molds has to be considered, as not all pieces and be made to certain radiuses. Designing these entries can be challenging but in a satisfactory way.
Closing the door.
There aren’t any off-the-shelf solutions for projects like these. It is a deep dive into customization, requiring a tailored approach from the start to the finish. But,
If you’re considering needing your grand entryway, please remember it’s the detailing that will make it a masterpiece. Work with professionals who understand the balance between form and function, and if using a builder, get the details to them early, as there will be many buildout elements to mark out and take care of in the build. The importance of precision is paramount.

Hi Robin
I really enjoyed reading your article about front entries and the impact stonework, that has been designed well and uses expert craftmanship to product, just how it can create a statement, the wow factor to impress, or simply be a custom bespoke design and become a work of art for a home or business which will last for decades. You are completely right though, each entryway would have to be meticulously planned out, as there would be indeed so much detail to consider with thickness of various elements, and how it all fits together – they certainly do reflect a touch of luxury to a residence or building wanting to standout.
